Meredith Writeup
A few highlights from the great music I saw at Meredith. ..

The Gossip
Beth Ditto, a heavy set but sweet looking woman in a pretty white dress kicked off the set with a venomous diatribe against the man who pissed on the toilet seat that she just used. The band played tight rockin set while Beth Ditto stomped and seethed, her stage antics sitting in stark contrast with her beautiful soul infused vocals. Each song was punctuated by a fiery feminist rant, which climaxed with “Standing in the Way of Control”. Apart from one bloke who decided to express his own counter polemic “get off you fat bitch”, the crowd lapped it up, boogying through the whole set and helping out with the chorus.
Definitely one of the standouts.

Amanda Palmer
Amanda from the Dresden Dolls put in a great set on the Friday night. “Coin Operated Boy” sounded great even without her partner in crime. She finished the set with a rendition of Radiohead’s Creep on the ukulele, which had the crowd crooning. If the music didn’t get you going, her outfit certainly would have.

Art Brut
These guys were a surprise gem. Singer Eddie Argus won the crowd over instantly with his energy. He had the crowd waving and chanting and then spat out a rant about why we shouldn’t listen to rock stars. Their songs sounded a little like Franz Ferdinand on a mega dose of amphetamines- fast, raw and funky with more than a hint of sarcasm.

Gotye and Midnight Juggernauts
A+ sets from both acts. Both bands played their fill of Triple J hits… And the crowd was happy!

Andrew W.K.
Does the W stand for wanker? K-King Dick? Dressed in white, he started the set with an interpretive dance, which looked more like an extended epileptic fit. He then moved to the musical component which basically involved putting on his drum machine, playing a bit of keyboard and then jumping around like a baboon on speed. Repeat Ad nauseum.
My advice to Andrew W.K. is to seek professional help for his AdHd and then maybe get some singing lessons.

Root!
Root! played to a handful of hungover die hards sitting on the hill amongst a sea of abandoned eskys and camping chairs on Sunday afternoon. They were the last band on the bill but well worth sticking around for. The band is made up of members from TISM and has taken TISMs vicious sarcasm and gone country, complete with white cowboy hats and boots. Some of their musical cannon fodder included Tex Perkins, Tim Rogers, Radiohead and mp3 players. Their song “Last band at Meredith” was a classic and a perfect way to wind up the weekend.
